To sand the base flat, place a sanding block on to the workbench, hold the figure firmly in your right hand, in an upright position, and push it over the sandpaper. Two or three strokes should be enough to give a flat base. The base is flat when the underside is covered in scratches from the sandpaper.

Drilling out for Assembly

Using the pin vice to drill out the hole in the casting (top), so that the figure can be attached to the feet and skis (bottom).

Sometimes, as is the case with the Frontline 20mm Gebirgsjäger skier, the figure is cast with separate parts. These often have cast-on pins and matching holes. However, these are usually blocked in the casting process and need to be cleaned up.

To assemble the figure, carefully clean up the pin that is cast on the end of each leg with a scalpel and a needle file. Find a drill of the same diameter and mount it in a pin vice. Next, clean up the ski and fix it in place for drilling. In this case, one ski was glued to the base. It could also be held with Blu-Tack. Using the pin vice, drill out the hole in the casting so that it is the same diameter as the pin, then glue the parts together with a gel superglue.
